Jackie Richter-Menge recently retired as a senior research civil engineer from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Cold Region Research and Engineering Laboratory. She is a Research Affiliate at University of Alaska Fairbanks, Institute of Northern Engineering, and a Visiting Research Scientist at Dartmouth College, Thayer School of Engineering. Her research has helped develop a more comprehensive understanding of the Arctic sea ice cover through direct observations.

Recently, she has overseen the design and deployment of a network of autonomous sea ice mass balance buoys, as part of the Arctic Observing Network, to document and understand the rapid change in the thickness and extent of the sea ice cover. Ms. Richter-Menge also collects in situ ice thickness and snow depth measurements to support the development of airborne and satellite-based observations, gaining first-hand Arctic experience by leading or participating in more than 20 field programs. She serves as an editor for an annual report on the state of the Arctic for the NOAA Climate Program Office, summarizing and presenting the most recent observations collected by the international community on the physical environment. Ms. Richter-Menge enjoys using her expertise and insight to convey the importance of the changing North to a wide range of audiences, including school children and community members.

Ms. Richter-Menge’s accomplishments in the Arctic research field earned her the Army Achievement Medal for Civilian Service in 1994 and in 2012 and an Honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2016. She served as co-chair for the National Science Foundation Arctic Research Support and Logistics report “Increasing Arctic Accessibility Over the Next Twenty Years” and the National Academy of Sciences report “Seasonal-to-Decadal Predictions of Arctic Sea Ice: Challenges and Strategies”. She also chairs the Science Steering Committee for the Submarine Arctic Science (SCICEX) Program and is sea ice science team lead for NASA’s IceBridge mission.
